AI-Generated Images on Blog Posts Signal Low-Effort Content to Technical Readers

A developer argues that AI-generated header images on blog posts erode trust before the first sentence is read, functioning as a quality signal in reverse.

The argument is straightforward: when a blog post opens with an obvious AI-generated image, a subset of technically literate readers interprets it as a proxy for low editorial effort and bounces before reading.

The mechanism matters more than the aesthetic complaint. Readers with pattern recognition for AI image artifacts, oversaturated lighting, warped geometry, and uncanny symmetry, use the image as a fast heuristic. If the author did not invest time choosing or creating a visual, the inference is that the writing received similar treatment. That inference is often wrong, but it fires anyway.

For engineers and technical founders running personal blogs or developer-facing content, the implication is concrete. AI-generated images are cheap to produce and easy to spot. That combination makes them a liability on posts where credibility is load-bearing. A post on a novel architecture decision, a post-mortem, or an opinionated library comparison depends on the reader trusting the author has real skin in the subject. A generic glowing-orb header undermines that before the lede lands.

The counter-argument is that most readers do not care and that image quality has no measurable effect on time-on-page for technical content. That may be true in aggregate. But the audience most likely to share, link, or act on a technical post skews toward exactly the readers the author describes.

The practical fix requires no design skill. Plain text headers, simple diagrams, screenshots of actual output, or no image at all perform better than a generic AI render in most developer contexts. The absence of an image carries no negative signal. The presence of a bad one does.

This is not a rule against AI tooling in content workflows. It is a narrower point about image selection as a trust signal in technical writing, and that point holds.
