An Atlanta man has been charged by US prosecutors after GrapheneOS-running phones wiped themselves during a border inspection at an airport. The case is notable not because the defendant did anything to trigger the wipe, but because the automatic wipe itself appears to have factored into the legal framing.

GrapheneOS ships with a duress and brute-force protection model by design. After a threshold of failed PIN attempts, the OS can wipe the device. This is not a hidden feature — it is documented behavior intended to protect data from compelled or unauthorized access. The government's charging posture suggests prosecutors are treating the outcome of that protection as evidence of intent.

For engineers and founders who deploy hardened Android builds, or who advise clients on device security, the implication is uncomfortable: a device doing exactly what you configured it to do can be construed as obstruction or evidence tampering in a border context.
